Rakuten Kobo has unveiled an impressive new e-reader – Kobo Elipsa – which has a 10.3-inch touchscreen, ComfortLight for reading at any time of the day or night with the device also doubling as notepad for writing and drawing.

The new device includes a Kobo Stylus and the Kobo Elipsa SleepCover which can protect the screen when not in use and also double as a stand.

Users can read their e-books comfortably on the 10.3-inch E Ink Carta 1200 touchscreen which has a resolution of 1404 x 1872 with 227ppi (pixels per inch).

Kobo Elipsa has 12 different fonts and over 50 sizes so you can adjust the size of the type for even easier reading.

They can create their own notebooks with the Kobo Stylus with the Kobo Elipsa even able to convert your handwriting to typed text and export them off the device if needed.

With the Kobo stylus, users can highlight passages of the book they are reading and also make notes in the margin.

The stylus mimics a ballpoint pen on the display so you can make notes or mark up documents and non-fiction books which can make assignments a breeze for students.

The ComfortLight makes it possible to adjust the brightness to suit your surroundings and the lighting conditions.

There is 32GB of internal storage onboard along with a 2400mAh battery that will run for weeks.

And not only is the Kobo Elipsa your book and a notebook but it is also the bookstore with access to the latest titles 24/7.

Readers can also use the Kobo Elipsa to borrow eBooks from their local public library with built-in one-touch OverDrive access.

The device supports multiple eBook formats including EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub and MOBI.

It also supports images formats JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP and TIFF, text formats TXT, HTML and RTF and comic books CBZ and CBR.

“When looking at what should come next for Kobo eReaders, we always go back to our customers, to the people who read every day, to learn how we can make their reading lives better,” said Michael Tamblyn, CEO, Rakuten Kobo.

“With Kobo Elipsa, we meet the needs of people who don’t just want to read a book; they want to engage with it—mark it up, highlight, write in the margins, or in a notebook of their own, because that is how they get the most out of the books, articles and documents they read.”

“With this new eReader, we merged the bookstore, book and notebook together so people can capture all the ideas that spring from books and writing.

“When looking at the eReaders currently on the market on one hand, and the eInk writing tablets on the other, we saw an opportunity to not just replace a pad of paper or words on a page, but to create a better way to find, capture and create ideas.

“Readers are thoughtful people, so we want to make devices that encourage thoughtfulness.”

The Kobo Elipsa will be priced at $599.95 and goes on sale on June 24. Pre-orders are now open at au.kobobooks.com.
